A new biomass and peat fired power plant was inaugurated on 16 March 2011 in Gällivare, Sweden. The steam boiler with related technology and steel structures was delivered by the Metso-Wärtsilä joint venture MW Power. When approaching Gällivare, a municipality with around 18,000 inhabitants situated in Swedish Lapland, you can’t miss the new power plant. Rising 30 meters into the sky, the blue-gray landmark represents a major investment for the municipality. With a total investment cost of around EUR 50 million, the plant produces 21 MW of district heat to local residents and 9 MW of electricity to the national grid. The new plant is contributing to both national and international environmental and renewable energy targets.
